At about 8 p.m. on Jan. 21, she ran into his bedroom and asked why he'd changed his status to: “BRYAN IS IN URGENT NEED OF HELP!!!" Rutberg initially thought little of it, and lay down for an after-dinner nap. But an hour later, when his wife woke him to ask what was wrong, he took a second look and realized his Facebook account had been hacked. Within minutes, his cell phone was ringing non-stop, with concerned friends calling to offer help. Many had received an e-mail with the story that Rutberg had been robbed at gunpoint while traveling in the United Kingdom, and needed money to get home. One even sent $1,200 to a Western Union branch in London. The Seattle resident and Microsoft employee then spent the next 24 hours in a frantic search for a way to contact Facebook and stop the hackers. But he was locked out of his own account and locked into a Catch-22; criminals had changed his login credentials so he couldn’t access his own Facebook page. That meant he couldn't remove the dire status message. He tried to use his wife's account to put a message on his "wall" indicating he was fine, but the scammer had "de-friended," his wife, so that didn’t work. And he had no outside-of-Facebook way to contact many of his friends. Before he succeeded in getting his account deactivated, a friend’s impulsive generosity had cost him big-time, and Rutberg was left wondering how carefully Facebook protects its users from these kinds of crimes. "It was all over by Thursday (the next day) but not without a hell of a lot of drama," Rutberg said. By then, friends had filled up his cell phone with text messages of concern, sent endless e-mails, and one even called Microsoft to warn the firm that an employee was in trouble. (Microsoft, which owns msnbc.com in a joint venture with NBC News, also holds a minority stake in Facebook.) Rutberg was the victim of a new, targeted version of a very old scam -- the “Nigerian,” or “419,” ploy. The first reports of such scams emerged back in November, part of a new trend in the computer underground -- rather than sending out millions of spam messages in the hopes of trapping a tiny fractions of recipients, Web criminals are getting much more personal in their attacks, using social networking sites and other databases to make their story lines much more believable. In Rutberg's case, criminals managed to steal his Facebook login password, steal his Facebook identity, and change his page to make it appear he was in trouble. Next, the criminals sent e-mails to dozens of friends, begging them for help. Bryan Rutberg Ad7t4470_2"Can you just get some money to us," the imposter implored to one of Rutberg's friends. "I tried Amex and it's not going through. ... I'll refund you as soon as am back home. Let me know please." Like all Facebook messages, the pleading note appeared right next to a picture of Rutberg, making it all the more convincing. One of his friends, Beny Rubinstein -- a fellow Microsoft employee -- fell for the story. At 10:30 p.m. that Wednesday night, he sent $600 via Western Union using an online service. The following morning, Rubenstein received a phone message from the imposter, asking for more money. So he went to a local retail store and wired another $600. In an e-mail to Rutberg, Rubenstein explains how he got taken in. "I thought the whole story was weird but given the circumstances my instinct was to help you out," Rubenstein wrote. "I was afraid it was a scam, but since I transferred using your name and given the emergency situation, I did it." No Facebook phone number Facebook confirmed Rutberg's identity theft story and says it's beefing up security in reaction to the new scam. But Rutberg isn't sure how effective the social networking company has been. His main complaint: There is no way to call the firm and sound the alarm that a crime is in progress. The company confirms it doesn’t accept phone calls. "We don't offer phone support. We would love to do that but with 150 million users worldwide we are just not staffed to do that," said company spokesman Barry Schnitt. "I don't know any free Web service that does." Instead, Ryan McGeehan, a member of Facebook's security team, said the firm responds quickly when consumers fill out forms on its Web site complaining about account takeovers and other privacy concerns. But Rutberg said he tried that, almost immediately, and got no response. He received no reply to e-mails sent to privacy@facebook.com, either. "Facebook has been no help through normal channels," he said. Only a message sent to a cousin who has a friend that's a Facebook employee got results. Thanks to this personal, internal contact, Rutberg said, the account was disabled. How to find out who's been hit? But one week later, Rutberg still couldn't get into his old account, meaning he had no way of knowing which friends had been contacted by the scammer. McGeehan said Rutberg's experience was unusual; identity theft victims normally have their accounts restored quickly through a process that involves e-mails from customer support with challenge questions like "What was your pet's name." Then, users can quickly track down friends who might be potential victims. McGeehan confirmed that other victims had wired money in response to similar pleas for help, though he said the scam has impacted a very small number of users. Facebook won't refund any of the victims, McGeehan said. Part of a chat dialog between the imposter and one of Rutberg's friends. Her information has been intentionally obscured. Facebook_altered_image Facebo ok is also adding tools that automatically detect suspicious behavior typical of a Nigerian scammer and warns users, McGeehan said. "We are trying to improve the process," he said. But Facebook has had several months to find a solution to the Nigerian scam – at least since the initial reports back in November – and it’s still failing to protect users, says Mark Neely, a Facebook user who lives in Australia, and was hit by the same identity theft scam on Jan. 14. He said he found the online security report form fruitless. "(I) heard nothing from Facebook for over 40 hours," he said. "The hackers were still active in my account -- I was receiving phone calls and SMSs (text messages) from concerned friends throughout." Only after he posted a note that got the attention of Wired magazine did he get a response from the company. His account was disabled, but when asked for data showing him which friends had been contacted by the criminals, Facebook officials refused. "Facebook told me that they could not disclose those details for privacy reasons and that I should consult a lawyer and obtain a court order for disclosure," he said. Because his imposter de-friended nearly everyone in his account, two weeks later, he has no idea how far the scammers got. He wasn't shy about his frustration with Facebook. "Absolutely pathetic response times, and even worse 'support' in remedying the problem and ensuring none of their customers lost money," he said. 'Easier to pretend you're someone else' Kevin Haley, a director at Symantec Corp.'s Security Response team, said his firm is seeing a sharp uptick in attacks on social networks, though he could provide no precise data. "It's easier to pretend you’re someone else in the Facebook environment," he said. "We are seeing a tremendous amount of phishing for login credentials for social networks." Rutberg isn't sure how criminals got his password, but he thinks he probably did fall for a phishing e-mail. Because Facebook regularly contacts its users through e-mail, and includes links in those e-mails to login pages, the format is ripe for phishers. It's easy to imitate Facebook e-mails and simply send users clicking to a look-a-like login page that steal passwords. Haley said there really isn't a way for antivirus software to stop such a scam. "There's no malware involved," he said. "Some of it can be caught with spam filters ... but really, this is just an instance of people talking to each other through e-mail, you can't stop that." RED TAPE WRESTLING TIPS Facebook's security team recommends use of an anti-phishing filter to weed out Facebook phish. It also recommends that users pay close attention each time they log on, to make sure they've landed on the authentic Facebook site. The firms also made a number of other recommendations: • Be suspicious of anyone – even friends – who ask for money. Verify their circumstances independently, preferably by direct telephone contact. • Don't use the same password for all Web accounts -- something many Web users do. Because Facebook is so popular, criminals who manage to steal any user's password will surely try it on Facebook.com. • Have more than one contact email address, in case one is compromised. Victims of the scam -- or any bout with Facebook identity theft -- should fill out the form at this Web site, Facebook says. Keep the link handy: It's very hard to find using normal methods from Facebook's home page. http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php ?show_form=account_compromised.

The "Buck" story

Question: What close call has made you think of Divine Providence?

For whatever reason the "Buck" story popped in my mind. This was a lesson in obedience or .... disobedience. Anyway, I was living in Walla Walla with Cindy and the girls and was totally homesick. I had the question pop into my mind "Am I taking advantage of this car?" you know the one that the Lord blessed me with... that's another meme. I ignored the Lord's prompting to stay in town. I packed before my shift at Subway so I could be driving in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere for my own emotional satisfaction. I closed up between 1-2am and made sure I was caffeinated w/a Starbucks frappicino (of course). I listened to contemporary Christian radio until it started to fade and then just drove. I liked the curves of the back roads but got antsy for a country station near a small part of the drive that creeped me out for awhile. Split second to turn the stations I glance down then up and out of the corner of my eye I see a shape the size of a quarter then about the size of a large manila envelope and then right in front of me I see a huge buck taller than my car and I'm thinking why isn't my life flashin b4 me like in the movies. then my next thought-"Lord, why'd you save me just to let me die, my family's not even saved yet" I was nervous about praying out loud to the Lord unless it was a rehearsed prayer and started to talk to Him right on the spot. I was shocked that my car was still moving and I wasn't injured or dead. I prayed that He'd keep me safe and let my car make it all the way to Spokane. Then realizing how bad things were that I'd make it to Pullman so I could call someone I knew in Spokane and then after strange feelings in the shadow of the hills on the highway unlit by the moon w/ only one headlight working I prayed that He'd let me make it to civilization. I was a woman alone on a Sat. night in the middle of practically nowhere and had just gone through a date rape about a year prior. Some unreasonable fear, some reasonable. My small silver Ford Escort made it 34 miles (I kept track of mile-markers) past where the deer impacted my small car. As my car coasted downhill towards the blue bridge that crosses the snake river I decided to let it coast to a stop on the shoulder. I thought I would lock my doors get the pillow and blanket from the trunk and hope for the best in the morning. I only freaked out a little when I heard coyotes but I was able to sleep for about 4 hrs. I knew it was early so I worked on a Bible study and then decided around 6 am I'd see if anyone was close by and if I could use their phone (no cell). I pulled off the road the night before wondering if the large tree grove with the sole street lamp was just another road, or an abandoned or closed siloh, or if there was a house. I walked slowly down the small road and saw the well kept white fenced areas and thought I hope nobody crazy lives here. I then saw a well maintained house and was slightly more relieved and greatly relieved as I walked up to the porch I saw a cross in the window. I was only interested in making a call and waiting back in my car. A sweet lady answered her door and said I'd just caught her and her husband just in time as they were headed to an 8 o clock church service. After hanging up with Cindy the lady asked my name and the name of the person I'd called again. Apparently that was her and her daughter's names. The Lord truly does have a good sense of humor [ just not the mocking kind-why would laughter be good medicine if He didn't ;) ]. So anyway, she was sooo hospitable. She offered to let me stay until my ride came and offered to let me watch TV or read magazines and of course use the restroom. I let her know I just needed the phone but was soooo grateful that even though God told me not to go (the whole premonition thing) He made a way anyway. Oh and after having a mechanic look at the car it was determined undrivable after the impact! oh yeah did I mention the most amazing part is that the car made it uphill for several miles! Talk about Divine Providence!! It has been posted today. As the story below demonstrates God is not only interested in our lives He cares deeply for our joys and sorrows. Only He could be both my strength and my peace in my every day life. The scriptures say ". . .Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." ~Nehemiah 8:10

Our fullness of joy comes only from the Lord. And that is what this little post is about. While I had extremely high hopes of being pregnant, finding out for the umpteenth time that I was not was devastating this time because of the sonogram from my OBGYN (even with the statement that he didn't want to raise false hope) it had shown a small form appropriate to what the development should look like if I were pregnant at the time. Knowing it will happen in God's timing has been very difficult to cling to at times. But I praise Him for He is good and I know He has good plans for me and my children. These encouraging words from Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." have encouraged me greatly. Even though it was not my expected end of the situation this is still a beautiful little snippet of writing I jotted downtown a short time ago.

Not having my digital camera has forced me to look around and describe the feel of my days in words without images. As I rest my aching muscles on this beautiful bench I notice the forest green of the lampost reminicient of a time past long ago decorated beautifully with the shimmering of metallic navy blue snowflakes reflecting the suns afternoon light. The intricate details make me smile inwardly as I think on the possibility of a little life growing inside of me. The unlit twinkle lights look like mini icedrops on the slender limbs of the barren trees. Soon I feel the biting cold and I'm grateful for the arrival of my transport home. I lug the heavy parcels from a day of shopping and reflect on the thoughts stirred deep within me after a hopeful visit with my OBGYN. I ponder the image of the small form on the sonogram. It has me wondering if it's my child. The scripture that I rest upon today is : "This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it."

While each day we're granted breath to enjoy our loved ones and the many blessings God has given us this memory of a bittersweet moment in the long journey to becoming a mother is yet another reminder that our joy is from the Lord and it is not based on our circumstances. He is the one, the only One who can grant us the "peace that surpasses all understanding". I hope you're encouraged and blessed in whatever situation He is taking you through.

Love in Christ alone,

Tiffany Renee Phillips

This is my prayer and hope for you as well. That thru Jesus Christ, regardless of circumstance may you experience the deeply satisfying peace and grace to make it through each day.

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your heartsand your minds in Christ Jesus." We've both come out from under misleading and dangerous doctrine to an authentic relationship with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When I think back to where I was these verses come to mind: "You believe that there is one God. That's fine! Even the demons believe that and tremble with fear." James 2:19 This referenses the belief that someone (my former self included) could be a Christian by simply believing that Jesus is God and not actually having Him as Lord of their life. This enlightenment can only come from Him. ("The person who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I, too, will love him and reveal myself to him."-John 14:21)

Also the verse that is the meaning of my middle name, Renee=Reborn.

"... Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Matthew 28:18-20

While searching for a meme I came across a post that made me want to start my own. So here goes:
This is the very first "Attitude of Gratitude" meme! : http://attitudeofgratitudememe.blogspot.com/

Question: What had God inspired you to do for another human being on this planet this year and how did you follow through with it so far?

The Lord has inspired me to create my very first meme and to post some difficult issues on this blog. In spite of what others may think or do, I have obeyed in the spirit of love and grace.
I look forward to seeing what it is He's inspired so many others to do! Philippians 4:6 is my inspiration.

This is the motivation for my new meme blog (not listed as a question). Just bonus reading! :)
I fell across one of God's grateful gals @ http://laurenstoenescu.com/2009/01/142/comment-page-1/#comment-2993 and she mentioned how grateful she was for their beautiful weather and it inspired this reply:
It’s wonderful that you’re able to enjoy such nice weather! We’ve had about 30 inches of snow up here in Washington! While plenty of us have cabin fever (hence more frequent blogging) there are still many things to be grateful for. I firmly believe an “attitude of gratitude” is a matter of the heart and not circumstance. I’m grateful that my husband makes it safely to and from work and our roof hasn’t collapsed as have so many around us. It still is nice to hear of someone grateful for the blessings they do have though instead of griping or grumbling. Have a fruitful and productive New Year! Praising Him all the Time in 2009!!!

"Real life in the real world is a tough, nitty-gritty journey that every pilgrim on planet earth must make. While some have come a looooong way, others have not. It is so important to choose healthy boundaries because some toxic behaviors due to toxic beliefs warrant a severing of relationship for the sake of all involved especially the one whose experienced wicked treatment even if it was for the sake of Christ(reference Manic Monday blog-Matthew 5:11,12). A Jewish victim of the Holocaust may forgive their wicked tormentor but that doesn't mean they should be in a relationship with that person especially if that person shows no remorse whatsoever and never apologizing for their wicked acts, in fact going further to justify them in their own minds(this includes lying) and especially when they haven't repented, they are only fooling themselves and deceiving others around them as well-I don't know about you but a millstone necklace isn't for me!(Luke 17:2). Christians cannot and should not be expected to do what God himself refuses to do, that is to enter back into relationship with an unrepentant individual. How long will you continue your lies?"

Proverbs 26:20 "Without wood a fire goes out, and without gossip a quarrel dies down."

Psalms 7:15-17 "They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves, the trouble they make for others backfires on them....I will thank the Lord because he is just; I will sing praise to the Lord Most High."

Psalms 15:1-3 "Who may worship in your sanctuary Lord? Who may enter your holy presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends."

Psalms 2:11,12 "Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!"

.

Great Balls of ...COLOR!!!

These are the colorful new light displays in our wonderful New Years Eve Ball that is dropped annually @ Times Square in New York City. What is the biggest mistake you made in 2008 and will not make again in 2009?

Not standing strong in spiritual warfare....let's just say this lead to unexpected stitches ...one of which I still have to remove myself w/tweezers {alright-I banged on a book with the "safe end" of the scissors-they recommend banging on a chair in anger management classes [just don't break it or you could get "booked", ironically]} Let's just say I've learned what works and what doesn't!

2. Do you make New Year's resolutions?

Sometimes yes, other times no. This year I plan on exhibiting my paintings in 3 art shows (the minimum allowance b4 you're required to get a business licence) My hubby is sweet and gifted with numbers and has offered to help figure out the taxes.

3. Why or why not?

For someone who struggles with procrastination, setting goals and stating them out loud also specifically sharing them with others helps motivate said person to get them accomplished. ;)

4. Who do you nominate as “Man or Woman of the Year” for 2008?

I'd nominate Jesus but he's alive in so many hearts, too many people would show up! ;) . . . so I vote for my hubby. He has overcome some personal struggles with emotional abuse and has come out stronger and healthier than ever, he's gotten a 4.o in his classes while working on his Masters Degree online after putting in 40hrs a week on the job. He is compassionate, loving, and although flawed as we all are, a strong man of God! I love you Jason L. Phillips.

5. What was your greatest accomplishment in 2008?

I forgave my parents for admittedly and lying to the Red Cross and the United States Army saying I refused to donate my blood for a bone marrow transplant necessary for my sister who has Leukemia when both my brother and I were a perfect match for the transplant which is basically unheard of. My brother was pulled from his IRAQ tour because of their lies. See her list: http://manna4moms.blogspot.com I started with her quote->"...He was taking care of us. .. So, I decided to make a list of how I have seen the Lord answer our prayer for provision":

1. The church had some pears and onions and potatoes... I got to share the pears and a book with a neighbor. 2. My husband got to the store to get bread and basic essentials including my medications with very limited bus scheduals due to nast weather. 3. Jason(my hubby) found favor in working from home when stranded at home on Thurs. because of nearly 20 inches of snow and ok from employer for Friday to take the day off; a 3 day weekend where we battled it out on the chess board. 4. Jason took home an ipod holder thingy(not your tech-savvy gal) (we need the ipod now) but it gets excellent reception of radio stations and I can wake up to music! 6. We got boots that fit and were weather/snow tight the first night of the storm (Jason didn't have any/mine didn't fit) [His provision is always right on time-never too early, never too late] 7. For our ornament exchange we were blessed with very large (softball size) ornament decorations that had candy in them. (also favor to select first monthly gift from his work.) 8. We recieved a 4-sliced toaster from another drawing thru his work- now we have a toaster to give away! 9. Our neighbor gave us a box of choclates just in time for Christmas (obviously not a necessity yet He delights in giving us the desires of our hearts even in little things Ps.37:4) 10. I sold our parakeets to a safe home-a very sweet person who's home a lot and takes good care of them- We got to make the exchange on Thanksgiving Day. 11. Friends who were sensitive to the Spirit's leading have prayed for us this season... 12. The girl across the street got to work on the worst day of the storm and I was blessed to chat with her while we shoveled her drive and also greet some other neighbors. 13. The Lord has given me so much peace and wisdom about relationships where others have been abusive in the past. Christ is all about forgiveness and healthy relationships...So I pray you find many things to be grateful for through Christ alone this holiday season and remember His wonderful promises .... "ask and you shall recieve, knock and the door will be opened, seek and you shall find." Don't forget " You have not because you ask not" and "His Word will not return unto Him void".... Have fun looking up the scriptures if you don't already know them--there's a Bible link on the bottom of this page! Sing carols, drink hot chocolate or hot apple cider and relax with your loved ones this Christmas....they are some of the most precious gifts in addition to salvation the reason for the season.

A Bright Holiday!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280039585079191922" style="DISPLAY: block; Where you could select who saw what and share the beauty you chose with those you loved and not necesarily every peeping eye on the internet? Life's not really like that is it? Everything we do, good or bad comes to "fruition" as they say at one point or another. The good thing is nothing is ever hidden from the Divine Creator Jesus Christ, my God and Father. The strange thing is how any of us ever really live with ourselves and the wonderful thing is that we have hope like no other inspite of the impossible when He's our Savior and Lord. Hope everyone chooses life. For He is the wellspring of life and Deut. 30:19 lets us know that with heaven and earth as our witnesses, if we keep going forward with Him somehow, some way it'll be all right in the end.
